Why is the speed of the handrail and the speed of the stairs different on the escalator?

Escalators are designed to move people up and down between floors of a building more efficiently than stairs. They consist of a set of rotating steps, or treads, which move in a continuous loop. The speed of the escalator steps and the speed of the handrails are not the same because they serve different purposes.

The steps move at a slightly slower speed than the handrail so that people can safely step on and off the escalator. If the steps moved at the same speed as the handrail, it would be harder for people to keep their balance when stepping on and off the escalator. The difference in speed between the steps and the handrail is usually only a few centimeters per second, but it’s enough to make a noticeable difference in how people move up and down the escalator.

On the other hand, the handrail moves at a speed that corresponds to the walking speed of an average person. This makes it easier for people to keep their balance while walking on the escalator. The handrail is also important from a safety point of view, as it provides a support for people to grab on to in case they lose their balance or have to stop suddenly.
